Ebonyi state commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike Friday said that the state government is targeting 558,998 children between from 0-59 months, 147,249 pregnant women and 149,249 nursing mothers in the ongoing second round of 2017 maternal, newborn and child health week in the state.
Dr. Umezuruike who stated this in Nkaliki, headquarters of Abakaliki local government area while flagging-off the immunization exercise noted that the children will be given BCG vaccine, Oral polio vaccine, pentavalent, measles vaccine.
He added that the children will also be given vitamin A, De-worming tablets, micro nutrient powder, birth registration among others.
He called for concerted efforts to reduce maternal and child mortality in the state and called on parents and caregivers to take their children and wards to nearest health post to access the medical services.
The wife of the state governor, Mrs. Recheal Umahi represented by the wife of the Chief of Staff government, Mrs. Pateince Ofo Okorie commended the state government and partner agencies for their contribution in reducing the death recorded during child birth in the state.
Mrs. Ofo Okorie urged the women espercially pregnant once to always avail themselves of government medical outreach to enable them live a healthy life adding that the state government frowns at the death of any woman at child birth.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Abakaliki local government, Chief Emma Nwangele appealed to traditional rulers, religious leaders, town union leaders, women groups and village heads to ensure that pregnant
women, nursing mothers and children within their vicinities access the services to fortify them against killer diseases.
