Hon Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Barrister Solomon Dalung has disclosed that the Federal Government has released the sum of N50,000,000 (US$ 138,888) to the contractor handling the Abuja Secretariat construction project of the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) to fast-track completion of the project.
Dalung made the disclosure today in Abuja while declaring open the 52nd Ordinary Session of (ANOCA) and the Committee/Inaugural meeting of the newly elected Executive Committee Members of the Association for the 2017-2020 Olympiad.
The Minister who was represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry– Mr. Abdulrazak Salau declared that President Muhammed Buhari’s administration is committed to giving ANOCA the necessary support to ensure its effective take-off and operation in Nigeria; hence ‘the fulfillment of its pledge to build a befitting Headquarters to house the Secretariat of ANOCA in Abuja, and government prompt release of N50,000,000 for the purpose.”
He added that “a total sum of N314 Million (US$ 872,222) would be committed by the Government to complete the project apart from additional funds that would be required to furnish the edifice thereafter. He however pledged continued support and collaboration of his Ministry with ANOCA.
ANOCA’s President, General Intendant Lassana Palenfo expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for the prompt fulfillment of its pledge while assuring that the Association is poised for rapid development of sports in Africa to complement efforts of government to further enhance African countries’ Olympic qualification chances and participation as well as improve their prospects to win more medals.
