The minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajia Aisha Abubakar has said that the ministry would give more attention to addressing barriers faced by persons with disabilities as disabilities issues are too important to be ignored.

Abubakar made this known yesterday in Abuja at the celebration of 2018 International Day of Persons With Disabilities with the theme “ Disability: breaking down the barriers.”

She said globally, disability remains one of the major challenges that continually threaten human existence and attainment of meaningful development.

“This year’s celebration therefore is aimed at creating awareness on barriers to be broken, doors to be opened, individual attitudes and government policies towards persons with disabilities to be changed which guarantees their inclusion in the society. The celebration is also aimed at promoting disability issues and mobilising support for dignity, right, welfare and integration of persons with disabilities in all aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life,” she said.

The minister further said that the goal of this year’s celebration is principally to educate individuals and the society at large on the rights of persons with disabilities and show empathy towards their plight.
