The vice chancellor of Federal University of Technology (FUT), Minna in Niger State, Professor Abdullahi Bala, has said that the institution could only provide accommodation for 5,000 of its 22,0000 student population.
Consequently, the university has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Urban Shelterto build hostels for 5,376 students.
Bala, who disclosed this at the signing of the MoU with Urban Shelter, a private estate management firm, explained that the shortfall in the accommodation informed the decision of the school to collaborate with the firm.
He said that it was his plan to accommodate 75 percent of the students on campus so that they could be properly mentored and be exposed to the life on campus, adding that those opting for off-campus would be doing so out of choice and not a necessity.
The managing director of Urban Shelter, Rilwanu Sakihu Aliyu, said that the firm would do a thorough work as it builds four clusters of hostels of three blocks of 448 units each, 1,344 others totaling 5,376.
He said that the project would start in December under build-operate-and-transfer to with eight students per room and an annual rent of N70,000 and a completion period of 60 months.
