Athletes from around the globe are expected to storm the ancient city of Kano on December 4th
, for the maiden edition of 2021 Kano International Marathon.
The former Chairman, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and current chairman Kano State Sports Commission,Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima made the disclosure at the inauguration of 13-man organising committee in Kano on Wednesday.
He said the Kano state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bunu Bunu Sporting Culture Company to handle the organization of Kano Marathon for five years.
“We are going to provide support and logistics, but finances and other sponsorship will come from the company and its allies within and outside the country.
“Famous international Athletes from different continents are expected to arrive in Kano for this annual event, which will serve as an eye opener for local athletes as well give the state a chance to showcase businesses and culture in order to attract investors and tourists.
In his remarks, the Coordinator, North for Bunu Bunu Sporting Culture company, Abdurrasheed Sale Machika, who is also the Chairman, Organizing Committee, said their decision to come to Kano was because of the position it occupies in history and culture of not only northern Nigeria, but west Africa as a whole.
“Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) will soon arrive at the state to ascertain the viability of the event, also identify and inspect the route to be used.
“It is based on their assessment that the decision will be reached on whether to hold half or full marathon which is 21KM or 42KM respectively”.
Machika explained that the marathon is in three categories, first one is for students while second is for the general public where everyone is allowed to register and participate, but the last one is reserved for professional athletes from around the globe.
The event will be an eye opener and create awareness among the millions sports loving youths of the ancient city to taste their ability in marathon for the first time in history.
The 13-man organizing committee comprised representatives of the Kano Sports Commission, Bunu Bunu Sporting Culture company, Security agencies, Federal Road Safety Corps, KAROTA, Health officials and the media.
