A tech non-profit social enterprise, Noble Missions for Change Initiative has commenced the pilot phase of Information Communication Technology (ICT) training for students in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Executive director of the Initiative, Charles Omofomwan who spoke with journalists in Abuja on Thursday, during the training at LEA primary school, Aleyita, Abuja, said the aim is to equip children with basic computer skills in the 21st century.
Omofomwan stated that the programme tagged, “give-a-teach” is recreating working professionals to teach in more resource public schools in order to match scarcity and quality of teachers in the country. “Even the government have come up to say that Nigeria need to recruit at least 250,000 teachers to meet up the gap in basic education and beyond that we know that even the available ones there are many who do not qualify to teach certain subjects and more then, more specifically in terms of what we are doing is to bring that gap between private and public schools in terms of teaching.
He said the system is working through the use of volunteers, who in their spare time come to teach specialists subject like ICT and others. “Our plan is to spread across Nigeria but this is the pilot, we just launched and tomorrow being International Day of Education we believe is a good way to launch this programme officially.
“The arrangement is that once we have the approval to go to a school we talk the management and look at their greatest need in terms of specialist subjects so whatever need they have we will recruit working professionals to teach that particular subject and we try and provide that resources like what we did here. We are the ones that provided this generator and there is hope that we provide computers as we go along.
One of the volunteers, Ese Shakarbo said the ICT resources for primary schools becomes so important going by the fact that times are changing hence the need to put children on the right path especially, those in the public schools who lacks access to such.
