President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Habu Gumel has made a surprise public appearance at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics’ village yesterday amid speculations about the state of his health.
Social media platforms are awash with the news that the former Executive Secretary/CEO, Nation Lottery Trust Fund, has contracted coronavirus as confirmed cases continue to rise in Tokyo, venue of the 2020 Olympics.
But contrary to the speculation, photos and a video posted on ‘2020 Olympic Games Update WhatsApp platform’ show Mr Gumel, 72, chatting with the captain of Team Nigeria, Aruna Quadri and other Nigerian officials and athletes at the Olympics’ Village in preparation for today’s opening ceremony of the Tokyo 2020 games.
Mr Gumel’s appearance will relieve worried family members and associates.
A source at the Tokyo 2020 Games told LEADERSHIP Sports that Mr Gumel is hale and hearty, and ready to participate fully in today’s opening ceremony as the leader of Nigeria’s family and executive committee member of International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The source however confirmed that a Nigeria’s official contracted the virus, saying he is in isolation, receiving treatment and in a matter of days, he will be out of isolation because of the recovery rate.
