The maiden edition of the Inspector General Of Police (IGP) Weightlifting Championship Open in collaboration with the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation (NWF) would take centre stage today at the indoor sport hall, Package B of the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Force Sports Director, DCP Patrick Atayero, while speaking to newsmen ahead of the opening ceremony of the Games said the Inspector General of Police, Alkali Usman Baba is committed in supporting the development of sports in the country.
“Before he was appointed as IGP, he was the chairman of the Nigeria Police Sports planning committee, no wonder the IGP is hosting the first Weightlifting championship in the country.
“IGP seeks to promote sport because he sees sports as a unifying factor which goes a long way to promote cohesion, national peace and unity which we need this time” he said.
Atayero, also revealed that about 200 athletes would be out to compete for medals in the championships which will climax on Friday November 12th 2021.
“We are expecting 150 to 200 participants. It involves all our commands and also the letters have gone out to all federal agencies, Army, Civil Defence, Fire Service, Correctional Service, Custom and immigration. And we expect them to compete also athletes from the states will also competing” he added.
On his part, NWF president, Dr Abdul Ibrahim, noted that Nigerian Police and the Military are critical stakeholders as regards sports development in the country, adding that the door of the federation is open to more partnerships from the stakeholders so as to bring weightlifting back to its rightful position.
He also noted that all the facilities and technical officials are ready to host a successful championship.
“For the IGP championship that taking
is a testimony of what we want to do as a federation and we are doing it in collaboration with Nigeria police force and other different institutions.
He disclosed that the Nigeria Army are set to host similar competition in January 2022.
“We trying our best to make sure we bring Weightlifting to where it should be, because in Weightlifting Nigeria has the talents to win more medals in international competitions compared to other sports”.
