Students and Teachers of Junior Secondary School, Jikwoyi in the Federal Capital Territory have taken a sensitisation campaign to their immediate community on the dangers of premarital sex and drug abuse.
The students who carried placards with inscription “Sex education is important. Educate your child”, “Stand up and shun premarital sex”, “Flee antisocial behaviour, cultism, lesbianism, smoking” etc visited the Palace of the traditional ruler of Jikwoyi, Rev. (Dr.) Bawa Jetta and moved round the community in the campaign.
Addressing them, the Traditional ruler urged them to exercise discipline and good conduct.
“You will give your parents BP if you have problem,” he said.
Speaking to journalists, one of the students, Ifeanyi Ukpa, a JSS 3 student stressed that premarital sex can negatively affect their future.
“No matter what, we should not involve in it. We should stay away from bad friends.
Another of the student, Binta Muazu urged parents to monitor the behaviour of their wards, saying the home is the first agent of socialization.
A teacher in the school and Coordinator of the programme, Mr. Andy Samuel said campaign is to add value to society.
“The school wants to partner with the community on awareness of dangers of these vice’s which has become endemic leading to mass failure in academics and problem in the society.
In her remarks, the Principal of the school, Mrs Adenine Adesiyakan advised parents to always watch out for any abnormal behaviour in their children.
She solicited the support of Non-governmental organisation (NGOs) and other public spirited bodies to enable the school widen the scope of the campaign.
She expressed desire to take the campaign to the villages.
She disclosed that the school has a formidable female football team with potential to go places.
JSS, Jikwoyi has successfully represented Nigeria in SAGE competitions in different countries.
