Residents in Lagos have raised the alarm over activities of street urchins popularly called area boys who congregate in different joints waiting to unleash mayhem on their prey.
The residents who spoke with LEADERSHIP in a separate interviews said the miscreants are constantly terrorising residents both in traffic and on highway, Railway line, Pako, Ijora Badia, Oshodi, Mushin and Agege areas of the state.
It was also gathered that they also waylay passersby in the early hours of the day and late at night to dispossess them of their valuables.
The residents said miscreants who are between ages of 8 and 15 years loiter the streets, fending for themselves in tattered clothes, hang besides vehicles in traffic, begging for alms while some of them even engage in petty stealing and robbery.
The chairman of Badia East Community Development Association, Pastor Raymond Tedunjaye while giving a vivid account of the activities of the bad boys in the area, said they usually strike at the early hours of the day and in the evening.
According to him, “A good number of them reside at a place named Suara, a ghetto settlement behind Ireti Owoseni Primary School, Badia, some at Whitesand, a notorious criminal abode located behind Bola Tinubu Trailer Park, along the Iganmu axis of Lagos – Badagry Expressway.’’
The community leader said they often run into Whitesand for safety each time they dispossess their victims of their valuables, while some who try to wrestle with them are inflicted with injuries.
Commenting on their activities, the state commissioner of police, Hakeem Odumosu, said his men recently raided some black spots, in Oshodi Oke and Oshodi Under Bridge where 103 hoodlums were arrested with dangerous weapons.
