Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has declared that his nomination as the “2020 LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year” award will further energise him to continue to work for the people of the state, until the expiration of his tenure in 2023.
Wike made the declaration yesterday when the management of LEADERSHIP Media Group, presented him with a letter of invitation for the award in Government House, Port Harcourt.
The annual LEADERSHIP awards is scheduled to hold on September 9 2021, at the International Conference Centre, Abuja
The governor said: “We believe that what you have done will spur us the more and not for us to relax. I believe that we were elected not just to carry out projects within, some people said first tenure, some people said second tenure, but that is not current.
“In fact, what this means is that you have to redouble your efforts. So, we believe that we have to work for the people until our tenure expires on May 29, 2023.”
He thanked the management of LEADERSHIP Media Group for nominating him for the second time in four years, and dedicated the award to God and the people of Rivers State.
While extolling the founding chairman of LEADERSHIP Media Group, late Sam Nda-Isaiah, for standing by the truth when he was alive, Wike commiserated with the entire management and staff of the organisation over Nda-Isaiah’s demise.
He described the decision of the majority members of the National Assembly to vote against the electronic transmission of election results as a coup against Nigerians.
The governor stated that members of the National Assembly knew the consequences of their action against the people.
He said: “If it were a country where Nigerians are serious, no member of the National Assembly who voted against electronic transmission of election results will go home because all those who voted against electronic transmission of election results are enemies of the people.
“The world is talking about how there should be transparency, how there should be confidence in the electoral umpire. I have never seen a country where the electoral umpire said look I have the capacity to do this and people are telling you, no, don’t do it. Go and take permission from NCC. And these are lawmakers; I have never seen anything like this in my life.
“Honestly speaking, nobody that means well for this country will stand up in the National Assembly and vote against electronic transmission of election results. What are you hiding? Why not say, go ahead, electoral commission, whatever you require on this, we are going to support you.
“Those who voted against this should be ashamed of themselves. If you are a member of the National Assembly and voted against electronic transmission of election results, your children should call you and examine if you need psychiatric evaluation.
“Since they have voted against the people, it is a coup against the people and you know the consequences of plotting a coup. The National Assembly has plotted a coup against Nigerians and Nigerians should hold them responsible.”
Presenting the nomination letter to Wike, the group managing director of LEADERSHIP Media Group, Muazu Elazeh, said the governor’s practical approach to governance earned him the nomination for the second time.
Elazeh said: “As you are aware by now, Your Excellency, you are the LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year. When the Board of Editors of LEADERSHIP met for this nomination because it is something we do every year, when your name was mentioned, it was the only nomination that got unanimous endorsement because of your practical approach to leadership and governance.
“Because you are focused on infrastructural development which is resetting the business and economic development of Rivers State. In fact, when your name was mentioned, one of our team members said that it is Mr. Projects.”
The LEADERSHIP Group boss used the occasion to invite Wike to the year’s LEADERSHIP Conferences, which will focus on how to tackle regional and national insecurity.
Elazeh said: “We are also here to invite you to our LEADERSHIP Conferences which will be held on September 9. The LEADERSHIP Conferences is part of LEADERSHIP Newspapers’ corporate social responsibility.
“What do we do at the conference? We look at burning national issues and we call critical stakeholders to a roundtable, discuss, and proffer solutions, which are presented to policy makers like you for implementation so that we can make the country a better place. For the 2020 conference, we are looking at regional and national insecurity.”
Speaking also, executive director, LEADERSHIP Media Group, Abraham Nda-Isaiah, said it was the first time in the history of the media organisation that a serving state governor is nominated for the award twice.
Nda-Isaiah said: “This is the first time in the history of LEADERSHIP that a governor has been nominated twice. In the life of an administration, you are the first in the history of LEADERSHIP to be the ‘Governor of the Year’ twice.”
