Barr. Shehu Marshal is the Chairman elect of Jega local govt in the just concluded local government poll in Kebbi state. The former zonal youth leader north west zone of APC,in this interview with LEADERSHIP Sunday attributed the victory of APC at the poll to Kebbi government’s stance on purposeful leadership. He also speaks on some of the achievements of the governor which he said had earned him accolades. Excerpts:
The APC won all the just concluded LG elections. What would you attribute to this victory?
The victory of our great party the APC in the just concluded Local govt general election in Kebbi state can be attributed to His excellency Gov Atiku Bagudu’s clear stance on good governance and purposeful leadership. In the last two years the APC led government in Kebbi have created well over 78,000 jobs through farming, youth and women at the forefront. In the area of road construction, water supply and above all power he has done what no other government has done that before in Kebbi state, today we can boast of having at least 18 hours of power supply in Kebbi daily. On health, Gov Bagudu has revitalized the health care system and introduced primary health care under one roof. For the first time in 25 years state council on health was fully convened and held in Kebbi state with a view to ensuring an improved health care system. Student tuition fees within and outside Nigeria were given first priority under him, this irrespective of whether you or your family are APC or PDP. For these and many others the people of Kebbi felt they should come together and support His excellency in his effort of making Kebbi great again. There was the massive defection from PDP to APC. Chieftains of the PDP and their supporters went to APC to help Gov Bagudu rebuild Kebbi state. To this end the victory of our great party APC did not came as a surprise to us going by the aforementioned circumstances.
As chairman of Jega LG what new thing are you bringing on board and what are your plans for your LG?
My plans for Jega local govt can be found in what is contained in the APC manifesto. Gov Bagudu has started it and as the local council chairmen is to continue taking the dividend of democracy to the people at the grassroots. My approach sho
uld be “basic need approach “ so that my crystal ball will focus on those areas which affects the life of the people of Jega, taking into consideration the economic situation in Nigeria today.
The issue of LG autonomy has been a contentious issue. What is your take on this?
Because the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria have recognized the three tiers of government as Federal, state and local government it is only natural that local government autonomy will go along way in enhancing development at the grassroots.
What would you say about the recent judgment of the supreme court affirming Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic PDP chairman.Do you see PDP as a threat to APC come 2019?
Whichever way that judgement went it is for PDP and I’m not in any way affected as an APC member. To my mind what remains of the PDP is just a response of a dying horse and therefore cannot be a threat to APC come 2019.
