Dubai here we come. I thought as the driver assisted Altine and I to take our luggage into the airport. Of course from the corner of my eye I could see a porter gesturing towards us and calling to ask if he could help. Altine stopped and asked the driver to give the porter our luggage.
He did so and bid us farewell and safe journey. He had been working for Altine’s father Ever since she was in nursery. When we got to the check – in that went smoothly without drama. Our luggage didn’t weigh so much. Altine opened her purse and paid the porter as we prepared to go through security, immigration and all that. I stared at her like an alien. “You shouldn’t have.”
I said referring to the five thousand Naira she gave the man who was so very grateful. Altine shrugged,
“But I did. It’s a tip for his services.” I grumbled,” Very soon they would be charging us for this. It’s just plain crazy Altine. I might as well have taken a trolley and helped with the luggage.” Altine laughed as we handed over our passports to the security personnel before being let through, “You’re so disciplined Maimuna, you need to chill a little. We are on vacay, yay.”
I didn’t want to chill, if she had handed him a thousand naira, I would have said nothing, but five? Wouldn’t that corrupt his work ethics? The next customer he had he would be expecting much as well, and who knows maybe soon they would start charging and carrying luggage for a price instead of for free.
