The 2017 NCC Tennis League draws ceremony which usually kick-starts the very lucrative tennis event has been scheduled to take place at the tennis section of the Ikoyi Club 1938 tomorrow,Friday, June 30 2017, at 3 pm.
The league which started in 2015 had mouth-watering cash prizes for the winning teams and took top-flight tennis to eight different cities across Nigeria.
Last year, debutantes Team Offikwu won the trophy and carted away the sum of N7 million, while runner-up Team Tombim got N5 million. Teams Civil Defence and FCT which placed third and fourth, got N3 million and N2 million, respectively.
According to the organisers of the league, International Tennis Academy (ITA), the Minister of Youth and Sports Development Solomon Dalung, would be the guest of honour, while the Executive Vice Chairman & CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta, would be the chief host.
Director of the ITA, Godwin Kienka, said the opening ceremony would be a celebration of tennis and the nation’s youths from other fields.
“We plan to have challenge matches between the top seniors and our best juniors, as well as choreography and dance routines from the leading schools in Lagos in those fields. It should be a very interesting evening and access will be unrestricted for the event.”
As to the prize money, the identity of the teams this year and the venues for the games, Kienka said: “All we can say for now is that we have new teams and new cities that will be part of this year’s edition.”
