Worried by the various security challenges facing the state , Niger State governor, Abubakar Sani Bello has stressed the need to justify the about N100 million expended every month on security in state.
This is even as he advocated a well- defined constitutional role especially in the area of security for Traditional Rulers in Nigeria.
The governor who received the state Traditional Rulers council led
by the chairman and Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar on a on Sallah homage, yesterday, in Minna Government House, stated that he believed that the amount expended on security if given to traditional rulers , would be better utilized as they will be able to adopt their local mechanism to check the security challenges facing the state.
According to him ,the state government spends as much as N100 million monthly on security yet there are still incidences of Kidnapping, cattle rustling, and other criminal activities thriving in the staten in recent time .
“I support that we go back to the traditional ways of securities in our community, the traditional system performed better in the past and they can do better now if more powers is given to them. I recommend that we give more powers to traditional rulers on security grounds” he posited.
He further stated that “We spend a lot of money on security but we do not have a safe environment. In Niger state, we spend N100 million every month on security, I am sure that if we spend a fraction of that money on traditional rulers, we will get better results than what we have now.”
Governor Bello maintained that “We need a lot of prayers in Niger State. We are faced with a new kind of security challenges that is unusual. There is a new wave of kidnapping, murder, armed robbery and clashes.
