The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Rivers Port 1 Command, has confirmed the arrest of two Lebanese following an attempt to smuggle the sum of $890,000 from Nigeria.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, who gave the confirmation in a telephone interview with LEADERSHIP in Port Harcourt, however said the suspects were arrest on July 1, 2020.
Ivara said based on the directive of Nigerian Customs Service headquarters, the money has been deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
The Customs image-maker stated that the suspected were handed over the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation and prosecution.
He said: “Yes, it is true that we arrested two Lebanese for attempting to smuggle $890,000 from Nigeria. They were arrested over one month ago; precisely on July 1, 2020.
“After our investigations, we inform our headquarters who directed us to deposit the money with the Central Bank of Nigeria and we handed over the suspects to the EFCC.”
