President Muhammadu Buhari has commiserated with the family of the Deputy Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Umar Buba Jibril who passed on early Friday.
The President in a statement by his media aide, Garba Shehu sympathised with the leadership and members of the House of Representatives in particular and the National Assembly in general, over the sad demise of the humble and vibrant national legislator.
President Buhari also extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Kogi State whom the late lawmaker represented creditably for many years at both the state and national legislatures.
The President prayed that Allah would comfort all who mourn the late Jibril and grant his soul eternal rest.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has expressed sadness over the passing of Rt Hon Umar Buba Jibrin, the Deputy Leader of the House of Representatives, who died in the early hours of Friday.
In posts on his social media pages, Saraki said that Nigeria has lost another seasoned legislator and champion of the common man.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the family and constituents of the late Rt Hon Umar Buba Jibrin, deputy leader of the House of Representatives, who passed away early this morning.
“As a former Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Jibrin, was a seasoned legislator and a conscientious lawmaker, who always put the interests of the common man first — and championed them at the federal level. He will be greatly missed.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has described the late deputy majority leader, Hon. Buba Jibril as an astute lawmaker, who was committed to his people up till the point of death.
According to Dogara, late Buba is one of those people that if wishes were horses, we would wish that he would live forever.
“Unfortunately, this is a call which all of us who are clothed in mortality have to answer one day or the other and he has answered the call.
You could see the fighting spirit with which he fought this sickness; I was with him in London and even last week, the entirety of the leadership of the House of Representatives went to the hospital and we sat down, chatted, laughed.”
He regretted that the 8th House of Representatives lost a leader in Buba, at a time when his contribution t nationhood was needed most.
“Apparently, we didn’t know that he would answer this great call today. It’s unfortunate it happened. For us in the House of Representatives, we have not just lost a leader but we have lost a
brother, one of those voices of reason on the floor of the House of
Representatives, an accomplished legislator – a legislator par
excellence – and for me, a die hard supporter and I can assure you
that we will sorely miss him. “
He however lamented that the National Assembly had lost many lawmakers.
“It’s unfortunate that we have to do this time and time again, our
prayer to God is that God should preserve all of us members of the
National Assembly. I don’t think it’s ever happened like this before,
where we’ve had to bury – to my quick recollection – about 3 senators
and five members of the House of Representatives. On the whole, our
thoughts and prayers are with the immediate family members, the people
and government of Kogi state and the entirety of the membership of the
National Assembly including the management, and his siblings who will
miss him the most.”
