The Police in Kano yesterday denied killing two persons as speculated.
It was alleged that some men of the Nigeria Police Force shot two persons to death during a clash over the appointment of the new village head of Garin Ruma in Sumaila local government area by emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II.
According to eyewitness accounts, police personnel deployed to quell a protest by those disenfranchised by the new appointment resulted in the death of a male and female residents of the area. LEADERSHIP Weekend gathered that five persons suffered various degrees of injuries and were ferried to a government owned medical facility for medical attention.
The eyewitness narrated that, the villagers mobilized and attempted to barred the new village head from the entering the village mosque to observe his Friday prayers, when commotion erupted.
Mallam Sumaila Kogo Danbarau, a community leader, who witnessed the incident, said ; ‘’What happened is that some police officers went to the village and allegedly opened fire on people. As a result, two people died and several women were injured.”
The Kano State Police Command spokesman, SP Magaji Musa Majiya, confirmed that two persons, Mohammed Tukur 40 and a female named, El-Gwanar 45, died during the clash between two rival groups involved in the tussle over the appointment of a new t village in Sabon Garin Ruma in Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano state.
Majiya dismissed the allegation that the deceased persons were fell by bullets fired by police personnel dispatched to maintain peace and order in the area.
He said “the aggrieved parties have already dug a wide tunnel at the only entrance to the Village, which prevented the district head’s convoy, including the Policemen from gaining access to the village.”
He explained that there is a chieftaincy tussle over the newly appointed village head, Jamilu Mohammed culminating into the fractionalisation of the villagers.
He said, the factions engaged themselves in a manner that lead to breach of public peace and causing mayhem, prompting, the commissioner of Police in the state, Rabiu Yusuf to mobilise special force to the troubled spot to invoke tranquility and deter further breach of public peace.
The District Head of Sumaila Local Government Area of Kano State, Ibrahim Ado Bayero, via his spokesman, Ibrahim Chigeri confirmed the killings at Ruma village, he disclosed that one of the deceased named Tukur Mohammed was the younger brother of the village ward head, Sanusi Mohammed, who also suffered severe injuries from arsonists, that committed the alleged acts of culpable homicide.
