Governing Council of the University of Ibadan (UI) has named Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale as the new vice chancellor (VC) of the institution.
Adebowale’s candidature was ratified by the council led by Chief John Odigie-Oyegun on Thursday.
With the appointment, Adebowale has become the 13th VC of the over 70-year-old university.
Until yesterday, Adebowale was the deputy vice chancellor (Administration) of the school. He defeated 15 other contestants to clinch the position. The council had shortlisted eight professors for the position
The ivory tower had since last year been controlled by acting vice chancellor, Professor Babatunde Ekanola.
His appointment became necessary due to the crisis that erupted over the appointment of a substantive VC last year.
It came after the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past VC, Professor Idowu Olayinka, who left office on November 30th 2020.
The eight professors were shortlisted from the 16 candidates who applied for the position, including the immediate past deputy vice chancellor (Academics) Professor Adeyinka Aderinto.
The other contestants included acting vice chancellor, Professor Babatunde Ekanola, Professor H. Fawehinmi, Professor O. Farounbi, Professor Babatunde Salako, Adebowale, Professor G. Aderounmu and Professor O. Ademowo.
Adebowale was born January 11, 1962. He completed his BSc, MSc and PhD programmes at the University of Ibadan and became a professor of Industrial Chemistry in 2006. He had postdoctoral experience at the Eberhard Karls University, Tuebingen, Germany and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Italy. He has won several accolades which include Fellow, Nigeria Academy of Science, Polymer Institute of Nigeria, Chemical Society of Nigeria and Science Association of Nigeria. Outside the shores of Nigeria, Fellow Royal Society of Chemistry, Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung and lately, African Academy of Science.
Adebowale has a track record of distinguished research and service and he is currently conducting research in Applied Chemistry (Industrial Chemistry). He has published widely in both national and international journals of repute and has served as external examiners in Nigeria and beyond. To date, he has published over 130 research articles and a national patent.
