In the spirit of the Ramadan a Gombe philanthropist, Alhaji Abubakar Habu Muazu, yesterday supported an Islamic group Da’awah Relief Foundation to free 30 prison inmates in Gombe.
The inmates were freed from the Gombe Central Prison after payment of their fine during a visit to the prison by the Islamic group led by a popular Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa.
Sheikh Daurawa disclosed that the inmates were released after Habu Mu’azu paid a fine imposed on them.
He said the released inmates who were found to have shown remorse and being rehabilitated after spending substantial time in the prison, were released to enable them spend the forthcoming Sallah with their families.
Speaking on the gesture Habu Mu’azu said it is in the spirit of the Ramadan and to also help decongest the prison.
“Most of the released inmates were in the prison for failure to pay a token amount of money imposed on them as a penalty as such I decided to intervene by paying their fine in the spirit of the Ramadan and to also help in decongesting the prison.”
He then appealed to philanthropists and other members of the public to follow suit to help release other inmates.
While commending Habu Mu’azu for the gesture, Deputy Comptroller Abubakar Muhammad Abdu, said freeing of the inmates is helping in decongesting the prison which he said had overstretched its facilities.
He said as part of correctional and rehabilitation, the inmates are being trained in vocational skills to help them become self-reliant after their time in the prison.
