The Senator representing Plateau North Senatorial District, Barr Istifanus Gyang, has said that as a result of decades of mining activities on the Plateau without compensation, over 4,000 deadly mining ponds dot the land scape of Plateau North senatorial district alone.
According to him, these ponds are death traps to both human and animal lives.
Speaking to LEADERSHIP Sunday at his constituency office in Jos at the weekend, Senator Gyang regretted that most of these ponds have claimed lives of children and animals in the area.
According to him, some of the ponds have been successfully reclaimed along with land degradation and erosion control around building materials market in Jos South LGC.
“You can see the massive erosion control work that is going on there, which is part of the intervention activities organised by the Federal Ministry of Environment. I have spoken on so many occasions about the flood in Jos, Bukuru metropolis.
“I will continue to advocate and call for expansion of the reclamation process that has been started by the Federal Ministry of Environment.
