Sheffield Wednesday Halt Coventry City’s Premier League Promotion

Coventry City’s bid for promotion to the Premier League was put on hold after they were held to a goalless draw by already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday.

A victory for the Championship leaders would have seen them promoted later on Saturday, had Middlesbrough failed to beat Portsmouth. However, playing in front of an eager home crowd, Frank Lampard’s side struggled to find their usual attacking rhythm.

Their best chance came in the first half when Liam Kitching’s header from Jack Rudoni’s corner was cleared off the line by Svante Ingelsson. After the break, Jerry Yates and Ingelsson both had opportunities to give the Owls, now winless in 37 matches across all competitions, a surprise lead.

Coventry improved as the game progressed but failed to truly test Wednesday goalkeeper Pierce Charles. Ellis Simms came closest to a winner in the dying moments of injury time, his deflected overhead kick narrowly missing the target.

Regardless of other results, Coventry will secure promotion if they win their match against struggling Blackburn on Friday. Meanwhile, Henrik Pedersen’s administration-hit Wednesday side have now drawn consecutive games and moved to minus four points for the season.
