Towards ending the crisis in the Nigerian basketball fraternity, major stakeholders have moved for the ratification of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) constitution before the general elections of new board members.
The decision was reached at the end of the meeting between major stakeholders (Musa Kida and Tijani Umar factions) which was presided by the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, and the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC) on Wednesday in Abuja.
According to the Former board member NBBF and FIBA Zone 3 president, Mukhtar Adamu Khaleh while speaking to newsmen after the meeting said both factions were given 21-days to resolve the contending issues and to chat a new way for the development of the sports in the country.
“The meeting was very successful, the two parties met and discuss the sports minister and the NOC was there, we had a very fruitful discussion and a resolution has been made on how to solve the problems in the NBBF. The contending issue is the constitution some parties are not in agreement with the constitution and some are.
“The resolution taken is that both parties should look at the constitution and what area they don’t agree with, they should write it down and submit it to the ministry and the NOC.
He also revealed that the Extra-Ordinary Congress, Zonal, Players, Technical Reps elections have been postponed indefinitely.
“A 21-day ultimatum has been given for the sports ministry and the NOC to ratify them. No election, no congress is taking place until all the issues are resolved.
“The right thing has started both parties have seat down on a round table to discuss and it is very possible that a peaceful resolution would be arrived at,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chairman Caretaker Committee of Nigeria Basketball Federation NBBF Engr. Musa Kida has revealed that the game of basketball in Nigeria is bigger than any individual.
He reiterated that NBBF has a constitution approved by the FIBA and the only thing that can change it is congress, which is the ultimate body of NBBF
“Everyone was told to lodge whatever they believed is their complaint, and there will be 21 days of consultations and they will allow the NBBF congress to come and deliberate on those clauses, after which the NBBF elections will then be organized. This is a very sane way of taking a lot of people along in the development of the game in the country”.
“Nigeria Basketball is much bigger than Musa Kida. I know I’m a stakeholder in this matter, when you talk about the present tense of Basketball, I will be counted among. But what I do think is bigger than Musa Kida. Basketball in Nigeria is bigger than Musa Kida, and Musa Kida must not be seen as a roadblock to such a very noble initiative to get all basketball families together, as this will make our constitution good and everyone will do his job better. I will say that the greatest achievement is that we have a constitution and secondly that the constitution will be used to amend those things that need to be improved upon. That will be the interest of Musa Kida as the Chairman Caretaker Committee of the NBBF ” he concluded.
