A LIFE IN BRIEF
Nancy Chritopher Goshit is a young fashion designer from Plateau State. She developed a passion for fashion during her teenage years as she observed her elder sister sketch her outfits for her tailor. Her father tried to discourage her, preferring she studied any other professional course, but her mind was made up on fashion designing. She began by becoming an apprentice in a tailor’s shop in Jos until she travelled to Lagos for further training in fashion house. Today, she owns Nancy Chris Couture, which designs mainly for women; and designs bridal gowns and bridesmaids gowns
My name is Nancy Christopher Goshit. I am from Plateau State, Ngas by tribe from Vel. I was born on December1; the third child of Mr. Christopher and Mrs. Josephine Goshit. I graduated from Jobet Progressive Nursery and Primary School, Jos and proceeded to Nakam Memorial Secondary School Mangu.
HOW DID IT ALL START?
Well, it all started for me when I saw my elder sister Kangkemwa of blessed memory sketching most of her outfits before taking them to the tailor for sewing. I used to be fascinated with her sketches. She was artistic and I developed my love for fashion from there. Back then I was still in secondary school. After I graduated from secondary, I refuse to enroll in any tertiary institution. I insisted I wanted to learn tailoring. I remember my dad will buy forms for me but I will not fill them. After four years of waiting for approval from my parents, precisely in 2004, I went to learn roadside tailoring as it is called.
After six months of learning, I realised that the method of teaching and instructions given as to why things were done the way they were as regards tailoring were not definite. I also had issues with finishing.
It was not done the way I wanted. The finishing was poorly done and then the attitude of our oga towards his clients was not something worth emulating. Since I was bent on seeking for fulfillment at the right place, I came across a fashion school in Lagos, House of Henri Fashion Academy, where I applied and the academy to a large extent was able to address some of my challenges and my quest for fulfillment in outfit making.
My driving force is perfection. My own fulfillment of an outfit and the delight my clients have when they put on NancyChris Couture.
YOUR EDGE OVER YOUR COMPETITORS?
What stands me out against my competitors is the neatness of my outfits. Neatness of an outfit inside out is the edge for me. There is nothing as good as wearing a neat outfit that has definition and a good finishing.
My major challenge is finance to expand my brand, inadequate power supply and lack of skilled manpower.
SECRETS OF YOUR SUCCESS?
God is my success tip. I look up to Him in everything I do. Also I am a perfectionist.
What I dread most is failure of taking my company to the height it deserves, beyond doubt I should and will succeed.
My hobbies are sketching, sewing, singing, and strolling
Well my company is still at the teething stage. I have a clientele base that keeps me very busy but we have not reached the promise land yet.
One of mentors is Tiffany Amber. I have this love for her. She is a fashion designer well known for simplicity and glamour. Another mentor is Myles Munroe and a few others who help stir my ship to a walk in greatness.
My regret is that it took me this long to discover my passion and work towards it.
I have come to believe that you can achieve most of your dreams and aspirations in life. Say it, believe it, and work towards it. Don’t settle for anything less than the best. God is here to make all things work for us no matter the challenges.
YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS?
My most memorable moment was when I sowed a seed before starting my company which was the defining moment Nancychris brand was launched.
My projection for the future is to own a clothing industry in Nigeria and the world at large in the next 10 years.
HOW DO YOU BALANCE BUSINESS LIFE AND FAMILY
For the meantime I am still single so I devote most of my time for my business but I also create time for friends and family.
