Sultan Seeks Proper Funding For Environmental Protection, Conservation

The Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged the government and relevant stakeholders to give priority attention to issues affecting the environment, saying proper funding would help to curb environmental degradation.

The Sultan, who spoke as the guest lecturer at the 18th Chief S.L. Edu Memorial Lecture organised by the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) at the Bankers House, Victoria Island, said monitoring and evaluation are keys to meeting set targets towards environmental preservation.

Dwelling on the theme: “The role of traditional leaders in protecting and restoring the Nigerian Environment”, he called for a technical team for the supervision and measurement of attained goals.

He said, “There has to be a very clear political will by the political leadership, who should be prepared to put the funds where they are most needed, otherwise they will continue to pay lip service while the degradation of the environment continues unabated, until the consequences explode right on our faces, we pray not.

Also speaking, deputy governor of Lagos State, Obafemi Hamzat, urged residents to leave a better society behind for the upcoming generation; else it would be a disservice to posterity.

He noted that there is a big challenge in Lagos, saying the city is two meters below the sea level.

Hamzat said a decision on okada would be made soon because of pollution and accidents.

In his welcome address, the director-general of the NCF, Muhtari Aminu-Kano, explained that the foundation sets the tone for the year by organising a lecture that explores issues of urgent importance and new areas that should get attention on conservation in Nigeria.
