The ongoing strike by the Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) last Saturday stalled the prosecution of violators of the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Abia State.
Permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Iheanyi Ubani stated this while speaking with LEADERSHIP after monitoring the exercise in Umuahia, the state capital.
Represented by a deputy director in the ministry, Ihuaku Obi-Maduka, he said the violators were instead forced to participate in the exercise around where they were apprehended.
Warning that both the ministry and the government frown at such attitude, Ubani added that the ministry would not condone the attitude in future no matter whose ox is gored.
Similarly, he noted with dissatisfaction that some youths have continued to use the period to play football along the street, saying one day, they too will find themselves bearing the wrath of their action.
He expressed satisfaction with those who turned up for the exercise, reminding the people that by keeping their environments clean, they will be assisting in keeping themselves and others healthier.
