The University of Calabar (Unical) has elected first female Vice chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi as eleventh Vice chancellor since the institution was established 45 years ago.
Obi, a professor of education defeated other 12 professors who contested the position with her to cling the position.
The academic don will succeed Professor Zana Akpagu, the 10th Vice Chancellor of the institution whose tenure will elapsed in November to pave way for Obi who is expected to assume office on the 1st of December 2020.
In a brief interaction with journalists 12 hours after her emergence as the VC, the Chairman of the Governing Council of the institution and Pro Chancellor of the institution, Senator Nkechi Nwaogu stated that the exercise was transparent and followed according to the guidelines provided by the Ministry of Education.
Nwaogu stated that Professor Obi’s emergence is a victory for the women stressing that the 10th Governing Council expects her to build on what the outgoing Vice Chancellor had put on ground.
In her words, Nwaogu stated, “What we assured the university community is that we were going to be transparent, open, fair and just.
“There is a guideline from the Ministry of Education as to how to conduct interview for the appointment and there are so many parameters we had to look into and that is exactly what we did.
“What I expect from her is to look at what the outgoing Vice Chancellor has done, governance is a continuum, start from where he has stopped and ensure there is integration even amongst all the people that contested with her”.
Also speaking, the VC elect, stressed that all the glory would be given to God Almighty who paved way for her emergence and pledged and to run an inclusive administration.
The academic don said, “I’m happy and return all the glory to God. I just received my appointment letter from the 12th Council as Vice Chancellor elect.
“The process was free and fair, and I promise to run an inclusive administration.”
