National Population Commission (NPC) has affirmed its commitment and readiness In conducting an accurate national census across the country.
According to the NPC’s commissioner representing Kaduna state, Dr. Abdulmalik Mohammed Durunguwa while speaking to newsmen in Abuja yesterday on the need for a population count, the commissioner stated that it would allay the fears of election malpractice ahead of the upcoming elections.
“There is need for a census in Nigeria and we at the commission also agree that census is very exponential right now but the problem lies in how it is received. it is either politicized or discredited and this is a major problem.
*Hence a one man one count is what we are propagating and this can.be assured through the conduct of a national census. This would go a long way in restoring the faith of Nigerians during elections.
He further reiterated the commission’s commitment in carrying out the census, stating that it only awaited the President’s call to swing into action.
*We just need a proclamation from the President and I can assure Nigerians that the commission is ready to deliver.
“The commission’s leadership is committed to the responsibility saddled on it to conduct an undisputed and accurate population count.
Vowing to give accurate data , Durunguwa revealed that the commission would make sure that it produces trusted numbers through the use of technology.
Citing the Enumeration exercise carried out by the commission, he assured that there was no room for manipulation.
‘We avow to give accurate data and we will achieve this through the use of electronic gadgets and ICT based data collection tools.
*We can assure Nigerians of this because we have been able to conduct an Enumeration of Area Demarcation in the whole 774 local government areas in the country.
“With this we have captured every home in Nigeria using geo satellite imagery , hence no one can fake a village or number of persons and this will also be paperless and this would give accurate data.
During the course of the event, the commissioner was awarded for his contribution towards peace building and grassroots development by the Coalition of Civil Society of Nigeria under the Leadership and Soccour Foundation in conjunction with Waka About, Wazobia and NTA Abuja.
