Also speaking, Bayelsa State governor, Seriake Henry Dickson, noted that education remains key to the development of a nation, saying education is a fundamental right for everyone and key to the future of any country.
Governor Dickson who disclosed this in his response shortly after being conferred with the LEADERSHIP Governor of the Year 2017 Award, said education is the ‘’most important weapon in a person’s arsenal in today’s world.’’
The ‘Countryman’ governor, as he is fondly called, said education has its basic price everywhere, but the only thing more expensive than investing in education is not investing in education.
He said inadequate education produces high costs for society in terms of public spending, crime, health, and economic growth.
‘’No country can afford to leave too many of its children behind and not to help them achieve the competencies needed for a self-fulfilled life in economic independence,’’ he said.
He maintained that education remains one of the most important duties of any government, adding that it is a public responsibility to provide access to high quality education for everyone.
‘’Investment in education has the highest returns and this is one of the most important area we are looking at as government,’’ he stated.
Governor Dickson said going by the remarks of the Guest Speaker and former governor of Cross River State, Donald Duke, in few years to come, Nigeria will become the most populous nation in the world.
He wondered what value the nation’s population would be if the country does not give priority to education.
The governor noted: ‘’With the nation growing population, if we don’t have the right education and skill to compete with globalised nation in the world then this population will become a liability and a major setback to our national aspirations.
‘’We must make investment in education a top priority and we will always do this. When we assumed office, we made it clear that we are not going to relent in making education our priority. Of course, it is good to invest in roads, health care, economy and other infrastructural project but all of this will be of no significance if we failed to invest in capacity building of our people.
‘’When you invest in people, it does not deteriorate with time, and it is the only investment that has the capacity to replicate itself. I want to thank LEADERSHIP Group for the award and recognition”.
The governor dedicated the award to the people of Bayelsa, especially his education team.
