Jehovah’s Witnesses Ease Rules On Personal Blood Use

Jehovah’s Witnesses have announced a significant doctrinal clarification on the use of blood in medical care, granting members the right to decide whether their own blood can be used during surgeries and other procedures.

The new guidance, delivered in a video statement maintains the long-standing prohibition against transfusions involving another person’s blood, but introduces greater personal discretion when it comes to the use of a patient’s own blood.

A member of the religion’s Governing Body, Gerrit Lösch, said the clarification was aimed at allowing Christians to make individual, conscience-based decisions in line with biblical teachings.

“Regarding the use of one’s own blood…a Christian must decide for himself how his own blood will be handled in the course of a surgical procedure, medical test, or current therapy,” Lösch said.

He explained that while abstaining from blood remains a core doctrinal principle, the Bible does not explicitly address the use of a person’s own blood in medical or surgical settings. Citing scriptural references from the time of Noah and the Mosaic Law, he noted that Christians today are not bound by ancient directives requiring blood to be poured out.

“The Bible does not comment on the use of a person’s own blood in medical and surgical care,” he added.

Under the clarified position, members may now choose whether their blood can be removed, stored, and later returned during treatment. According to Lösch, some may accept such procedures, while others may decline, with the decision left entirely to individual conscience.

He noted that many Jehovah’s Witnesses already accept certain medical procedures involving their own blood, including blood tests, heart-lung machines, cell salvage techniques, and kidney dialysis.

The development comes amid renewed public interest in Nigeria following the death of cancer patient and social media personality, Mensah Omolola, popularly known as AuntieEsther, in December 2025.

Omolola had publicly rejected a doctor-recommended blood transfusion on religious grounds, opting instead for alternative treatments. Her case drew widespread attention and support, with Nigerians reportedly donating over ₦30 million toward her care. Despite warnings of possible disciplinary action from her church, she maintained her position until her death, sparking a national debate on the intersection of faith and medical advice.

Jehovah’s Witnesses reiterated that their stance on blood is rooted in religious belief rather than opposition to modern medicine. In a previous statement, the group emphasised that blood is viewed as sacred, representing life, and must be respected accordingly.

“God views blood as representing life. So we avoid taking blood not only in obedience to God but also out of respect for him as the Giver of life,” the statement read.

LEADERSHIP gathered that the doctrine is based on several biblical passages, including Genesis 9:4, Leviticus 17:10, Deuteronomy 12:23, and Acts 15:28–29, which instruct believers to abstain from blood.

Despite this, the group stressed that its members actively seek quality healthcare and make use of modern “bloodless” medical techniques. These include procedures such as cell salvage, dialysis, and the use of heart-lung machines, which allow patients to undergo treatment while adhering to their religious convictions.

With the latest clarification, Jehovah’s Witnesses say they are reaffirming both their commitment to scriptural principles and their recognition of evolving medical practices, while placing greater responsibility on individual members to make informed personal decisions.
