Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi has lamented the neglect of the game of boxing as Nigerian boxers warm up to celebrate the 78th birthday of the boxer turned monarch with boxing tournaments.
Speaking through his son who is a member of the House of Representatives, Prince Akeem Adeyemi, the monarch attributed poor performance of Nigerian boxers at international tournaments to lack of commitment of government to the game.
The Chairman, Organizing Committee for the event, Mojeed Okedara made this known in a statement made available to newsmen in Osogbo.
Okedara disclosed that the October 15th event would gulp a total sum of N20million to make the ceremony a colourful and historic one.
Meanwhile the statement quoted the Alaafin as saying: “I don’t care attitude of government at all levels towards supporting the game of boxing has been responsible for the country’s inability to produce world champions as it was in the past.”
