While some are of the view that the nation needs geographical restructuring at this critical period, Sokoto State governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has however said such call was not necessary.
Tambuwal who insisted that, with good governance in place all Nigerians will sufficiently feel the impact of being member of one great nation, added that, equity and genuine sense of belonging is what matters most.
“There are really challenges in Nigeria, and it is not peculiar to the nation, and these challenges are surmountable.
“We believe in the unity of the country and the unity of Nigeria is non-negotiable. Dialogue is also the most potent tool to resolve all problems, anywhere and at anytime”.
Talking to several groups including representiatves of the Association of Resdient Communities, Sokoto Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture, Sokoto Women Association, Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations and the host of others, Tambuwal advocated for a review in the nation’s revenue sharing formula in favour of States and Local Government than the Federal.
According to Tambuwal, the call for a review in the revenue sharing became very necessary in view of the fact that, both States and LG shoulder more responsibility of the nation’s citizenry than the FG.
“The revenue allocation formula should be restructured to ensure federating units get more allocation than the centre.
“There’s urgent need to review the allocation formula in the country because doing so will strenghten the Nigerian federation and help to shed off some of the excess powers the Federal Government currently has.
“States and local government areas deserve more allocation because they shoulder overwhelming responsibilities of the citizens of the country.
“The states and the local governments are the closest tiers of government to the people, but they are getting less than the federal government’s allocation from the federation account.
“The ugly trend should be reversed in favour of the federating units, to enable them meet the overwhelming demands of the people at grassroots level,” Tambuwal noted.
In his assurance of equity and justice for all as the governor of the state, Tambuwal assured members of the resident communities that his administration will not discriminate against anybody irrespecrive of religion, ethnic, region or whatever adding that, they are equal partners in running the affairs of the Seat of the Caliphate state.
The governor further admonished the people of the state to offer constructive criticism saying those who criticise government also help in ensuring that things are done aright.
On their parts, representative Chamber of Commerce, Alhaji Kabiru Tafida of the Resident Communities and the chairman of commended the governor for his steering leadership qualities.
