Team Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have continued to make Abuja proud as they continued to win more medals at the just concluded second edition of National Youth Games, NYG staged at University of Ilorin, Kwara state capital.
So far, FCT which paraded unarguably the youngest Athletes in the youth competition have hauled seven medals including two gold, one silver and four bronze.
The breakdown of various sports with the trail-blazing performance indicated that chess snapped up one gold and Bronze, Tennis won one gold and a silver while karate got the other bronze medals.
Delta state led the medals table with 24 medals comprising nine gold, five silver and 10 bronze medals. Akwa Ibom followed closely with 15 medals made up of seven gold, seven silver and six bronze while Anambra got 16 medals of six gold, four silver and six bronze.
Meanwhile, FCT Minister Alhaji Mohammed Musa Bello has secured a historic insurance cover for all athletes who took part at the NYG.
Making this known in Ilorin, acting director of sports in FCT Chief (Mrs) Dilichukwu Onyedinma maintained that the unprecedented gesture was one sure way if ensuring a long term plan aimed at giving athletes the needed attention even as they take part in subsequent competitions.
Onyedinma equally praised the present administration’s genuine interest in the intellectual development of Youths in Abuja using Sports as vital tool.
“We are grateful to the Minister for this uncommon effort which has shown his interest in making the development of youths a top priority through sport. With this, athletes will put in more effort and do
their best in actualizing big things in their career as well as making Abuja proud.
“Sports have no doubt become a vital tool that can’t be looked down if meaningful human resources development can be achieved,” she added.
