President Muhammadu Buhari has reiterated the resolve of the Federal Government to continuously promote sports development in Nigeria.
Buhari, who spoke at the opening ceremony of the 2016 Nigeria Army Sports Festival at the main bowl of the National Stadium, Abuja, said it was high time the Nigerian Army took their rightful place in the sports circle.
Buhari, represented by the Minister of Interior, Lt. General Abdulrahman Dambazau, seized the opportunity to call on organizers of the event to use the opportunity to identify talents that would represent Nigeria in international sporting meets.
“We remain committed to ensuring that you are provided with the required resources and motivation. Also, the administration is devoted to improving sport development in the country and taking adequate steps to ensure [that] Nigeria continues to excel at international sports tournaments,” he said.
Also declaring the 16th Army Sports Festival Open, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Y. Buratai, welcomed guests, officials and athletes to the event emphasised the need to improve the physical fitness of Nigerian troops and inculcate the spirit of fair-play and friendly contest.
