The Nasarawa state house of assembly has passed a resolution urging the state government to ensure early and timely distribution of fertilizers and others farm inputs at affordable rate to farmers in order to boost food production in the state.
Alhaji Ibrahim Balarabe-Abdullahi, the speaker of the House made the call on Friday after Mr Abubakar Kana, the chairman, house committee on agriculture, raised the issue under the matters of public importance during the house proceedings in Lafia.
Balarabe-Abdullahi commended Governor Umaru Tanko Almakura for his efforts in the agricultural sector which had impacted positively on the lives of farmers in the state and called for more concerted efforts in that direction.
He said that timely distribution of fertilizers at affordable rate to farmers in the state would not only boost food production but would also fight hunger, poverty as well as boost the revenue base of the state and the country at large.
“Agriculture does not only provide food, fights poverty, hunger, unemployment but it also improves on the revenue base of the country, improves on the standard of living as well as the socio-economic development of the country.
“It is in view of this that we are passing a resolution urging the state government to double its efforts in the procurement of fertilizers and other farming inputs to farmers at affordable rate so as to have hope of bumper harvest in the 2017 and beyond,”he said.
