By Francis Okoye, Maiduguri
Following the spot assessment of Internally displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Maiduguri after his 19 days of assumption of office, the Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency ( NEMA ),
Engr Mustapha Maihaja has expressed concern over the alarming number of persons displaced by the Boko Haram Insurgency in Borno State The NEMA Boss noted that with the number of those already in camps in addition to about 78, 000 refugees returning to Nigeria from Cameroon, needed both government and International bodies and all other stakeholders to put heads together towards averting impending humanitarian crisis in Northeast and Borno in particular.
Alhaji Mahaja stated this yesterday shortly after visiting Dalori , Bakassi and Gubio IDPs Camps all in Maiduguri, adding that the Visit is to enable him see things for himself for better understanding of the predicaments of the displaced Persons. “Iam here today on a working visit after 19 days of taking over the affairs of NEMA and I’m impressed with some of the things I saw in the
Camps. Where there are short comings, we will ensure that adequate measures are taken to forestall them. I have been briefed by the camps’ management and leadership of the IDPs on some of their challenges and I assured them that all will be addressed.
“Under my watch, NEMA Will ensures that no IDP is starved of food The era where IDPs will line up in the que for food will soon be a thing of the past as officials will directly serve their foods while in their shelters to avert suicide bombers taking advantage of that to Strike in any of the camps.
“Some of the challenges like inadequate health care facilities, drugs, and nutritional foods, instructional materials for the IDPs schools among others complained of by the camps’ managers will be given immediate attention”, he said. Speaking on why government reversed its earlier decision of resettling all IDPs back to their Communities before may 29 this year, Alhaji Mahaja said the decision was taken to ensure that all the Communities are absolutely safe before the return of the IDPs.
