Reps Summon NEMA Boss Over N13bn Monthly Expenses

By KautharAnumba-Khaleel, Abuja

The House of Representatives yesterday issued the director general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Alhaji Mustapha Maihaja a 48 hour ultimatum to appear before it and explain how he spent N13 billion within one month.

Chairman of the House Committee on NEMA, Hon. JibrinSantumari who gave the deadline at a hearing, berated the DG for standing the committee up.

Santumari who alleged that Maihaja has embarked on a wasteful spending spree three months after assuming office, also frowned at the attitude of the NEMA boss who has refused to honour the committee’s invitation and make available, documents requested by the committee despite several letters of reminder.

“We have invited him on different occasions and he has refused to appear. We requested for some documents from him on how he spent N13 billion in one month.

“We also requested details on the utilisation of the intervention funds and state of implementation in the north east. But he didn’t come or send any document.

“He just sent a letter about thirty minutes ago saying he cannot come because he’s in Borno. We cannot condone this behaviour from any public servant.

“The National Assembly is above any other assignment he has and must appear before this committees unfailingly on Thursday to furnish us with the documents requested and answer questions we have raised”, the chairman stated.

The lawmaker insisted that the committee was interested in knowing how funds given to the agency from the service wide votes were being utilised.

In his contribution, Hon. Bashir Baballe decried the practice whereby heads of government agencies and parastatals undermine the authority of the National Assembly.

Babale said the DG’s attitude amounts to disrespect for the parliament and should be compelled to appear and defend his actions.
