The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN) has stressed the need for harmony among the various professional bodies and associations in the health sector.
Speaking at the opening of the 53rd annual scientific conference and workshop of the association in Kaduna, the President of the association, Alhaji Toyosi Raheem lamented that there is inter-professional rivalry between the pathologists and medical laboratory scientists.
He urged the Minister of Health to use his goodwill in office to resolve the issue of rivalry. “If this matter cannot be resolved in our own generation, then the future is bleak. We as laboratory scientists are not going beyond our schedules, so others should not too. We must all understand our job schedules,” he said.
While he expressed worry over substandard equipment and reagents in the country, he called on the Federal Government to support the In Vitro diagnostic laboratory established under the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria to check the quality of laboratory diagnoses that are coming into the country.
Commenting on the activities of quacks in the profession, he warned the people against the danger of allowing quacks and substandard practice in the society. He noted that the association is partnering with the Medical Laboratory Council of Nigeria which is the statutory body charged with the responsibility of registration, accreditation and monitoring of medical laboratories in the country to achieve the elimination of quacks in the country.
At the end of the conference themed ‘‘Strengthening of medical laboratory services – A panacea for national health agenda’, he said laboratory scientists are expected to be more dedicated to quality laboratory services in the country; adding that it is also expected to achieve intra and inter-professional relationship in the health sector.
