House Committee Expreses Disappointment Over Deplorable Infrastructure In KADPOLY, Drills Accountant At NBTE

The House of Representatives Committee on education yesterday expressed disappointment over the deplorable conditions of infrastructures and financial misappropration at the Kaduna Polytechnic.

This is just as the acting accountant of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) was subjected hot seat to provide explanations for some income and expenditures.

The House Committee were in Kaduna on oversight functions to federal institutions.
Members of the committee could not believe thier ears when at the first point of call, the Rector, Kaduna Polytechnic, Professor Idris Mohammed Bugaje told them that he inherited N614, 806, 193.50 liabilities and claims with dilapidated infrastructures.

This was even as the committee slamed the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Dr.Masa’udu Adamu Kazaure for allowing a Federal Polytechnic in Bayelsa State that passed for terrorists camp to operate.

NBTE boss who gave the name of the polytechnic as Ekowe, admitted that only about 100 students are enrolled into the polytechnic with over 1000 staff srength.

He told the Committee that he had recommended during the last administration that the polytechnic be coverted to Naval training centre since it could only be accessed by either water or air transportation, but to no avail.

KadPoly Rector also disclosed he received no handing over notes upon asuming office as Rector few months ago.

Speaking frankly, the Rector said he also inherited over N615 million claims by Academic Staff Union of the polytechnic.

He equally told the bewildered Committee members that the most disappointing situation is high level of dilapidated hostels and offices for the past four years.

He said, “when I came on board as the rector, there was no handding over notes for me.

“I discovered that the polytechnic has been battling over 50 court cases, and several of the school vehicles were siezed where it cannot meet up with court orders.

“There are infrastructural decays in the institution, students defecate openly due to poor toilet facilities”.

Responding, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on education, Comrade Aminu Suleiman expressed sympathy over the ugly financial and infrastructural situation in Kaduna polytechnic.

To this end, Honourable Suleiman said the Committee will set up panel of investigation to get to the root of the decay, urging that the immediate past Rector and whoever was innolved will be recalled by the panel to account for any misdeed.

He however noted, “Kaduna polytechnic has lost its past glory.

“But, let me tell you, Rector, you are chosen to deploy your wealth of experince to remedy the situation, so don’t relent.

“We are going to constitute a panel of investigation to look into the matter, and whoever is found guilty will be prosecuted.
Mewnwhile, the Committee chairman has tasked NBTE Scribe to start a fresh recommendation that will see to the usefulness or otherwise of the Ekowe polytechnic.

He urged the leadership of NBTE and Kaduna polytechnic to tidy up their reports and furnish the committee with details of their income and expenditure before the defence for the 2018 budget commences.

Kazaure said some of the challenges facing the smooth operations of the Board inbluded non release of take-off grants to the newly established polytechnics, certificate descrimination; the dichotomy between HND and B.sc, among others.
