No fewer than 14 fleeing inmates of Ikot Ekpene prisons in Akwa Ibom State have been rearrested following intense manhunt for them by the guards.

It was gathered that the 14, who are serving various terms of imprisonments, were recaptured within Ikot Ekpene environs.

The Controller of Prisons (CP), Mr Alex Oditah, who gave update of the incident yesterday, said the recaptured prisoners were among the 47 that forcefully escaped from the facility, yesterday.

According to him, the Command has swung into action with a view to recapturing the 33 others still at large.

It was gathered that some high profile convicts, including those who murdered the former deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly held in that facility, engineered the incident in order to escape.

But Oditah, who said the cause of the incident could not be ascertained yet, however assured that the three-member committee set up to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the problem, would soon come up with findings.

He said no stone would be left unturned in establishing the fact behind the crisis that led to the jailbreak.

It was also gathered that the prison with the carrying capacity of 400 inmates, was already overstretched with over 800 inmates.
