Senate yesterday approved the confirmation of seven Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Out of the nine RECs submitted by the Chairman, Senate Committee on INEC, Senator Suleiman Nazif, the approval for the nominee of Akwa Ibom, Elder Monday udom Tom, was stepped down.
However, the Osun nominee, Eric Olawale has reportedly turned down his nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari as he (Olawale) was said by the Senate committee to have failed to show up during the screening, with no reason tendered. Although no cogent reason was given as to while the confirmation of the Akwa-Ibom nominee was stepped down, just as there was no explanation for the absence of the Osun nominee during the screening by Senate.
The confirmed nominees are Baba Abba Yusuf, Borno; Segun Agbaje, Ekiti; Uthman Abdulrahman, Kwara;Cyril Omorogbe, Edo;Yahaya Bello, Nasarawa;Emmanuel Alex Hart, Rivers and Mohammed Magaji Ibrahim, Gombe respectively.Pursuant to the rules of Senate, the Upper Chamber had in plenary on Thursday, December 21, 2017 referred to the committee on INEC the request of President Muhammadu Buhari to confirm the nominees.
Yesterday, the report of the committee was presented by the chairman, Senator Suleiman Nazif (Bauchi North). He explained that the nominees were duly cleared by the relevant security agencies including the police, DSS and the Code of Conduct Bureau. Nazif further noted that after a thorough scrutiny of all the relevant documents of the nominees, members of the committee were unanimously satisfied with the extensive qualifications, experiences and suitability.
