SPN Demands Probe Of Past Oyo Govs Over N11.5bn Fraud

Following the re-arraignment of former Oyo State governor, Otunba Christopher Adebayo Alao-Akala and two others by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged N11.5 billion fraud, the Socialist Party Of Nigeria (SPN), Oyo State chapter, has called for the probe of the past chief executives of the state.

SPN secretary, Abiodun Bamgboye, in a statement issued yesterday, described the re-arraignment of Alao-Akala as a glimpse of fraud often perpetrated by Nigeria’s capitalist ruling elite under the guise of contract system.

The party, therefore, called for a special panel that would include representatives of labour, pro-masses organisations, Nigeria Bar Association, etc, to conduct a public enquiry to truly probe the revenues and expenditure of the state government and agencies in the last 19 years of civil rule so as to reveal the real depth of corruption among the thieving elite often masquerade as politicians and businessmen and businesswomen in the state.

LEADERSHIP Weekend reports that former governor Alao Akala and two others, a former commissioner for local government and chieftaincy matters under his administration, Senator Hosea Agboola, and an Ibadan-based businessman, Femi Babalola, are currently facing an 11-count charge of conspiracy, awarding contracts without budgetary provision and  obtaining by false pretence, acquiring property with money derived from illegal acts among others, particularly over an award of a road contract worth N8.5billion between 2007 and 2009 to Pentagon Engineering Services.

He was also alleged to have ordered the supply of drilling machines on behalf of the 33 local government councils without budgetary provision.

SPN added that the revelation was not surprising because over the years, the contract system had been a fraudulent means through which capitalist politicians often award public money to themselves and their acolytes who usually masquerade as businessmen and women.

“This is why we of the SPN often call for the complete abolition of contract system while we advocate a public work system placed under a democratic control and management of a committee made up of the elected representatives of workers, consumers and the community,” he said.
