10 Missing-in-Action Female Musicians

Published

on

These celebrated female Nigerian musicians set the pace in the country’s entertainment industry that others are enjoying today. But of late, they are off the radar. Are they still singing?

Weird MC:

We all remember her from the Ijo Ya song and P Square duo and her unique dress sense. Her Tomboy personality is not easy to miss. Adesola Adesimbo Idowu popularly known as Weird MC has not been seen in a while. Well from the looks of it, it seems that the UK born rapper is focused on her consulting career. From an interview she granted we now know that she is into branding. In her own words, “I love property and recently went into branding, picking the artiste from scratch. I don’t want to wait till he blows before I brand. I brand him right from the beginning. It is a double whammy, you are pushing your artiste and the brand”. We wish her good luck but we also miss her.

Sasha P:

The First Lady of Nigerian Hip Hop has been notably missing for a while. Anthonia Yetunde Alabi popularly known as Sasha P has left the industry to pursue a career in fashion designing. The beautiful raspish voiced musician came into the scene in 2001 and we vividly remember “Adara”. The graduate of Law who hails from Oyo State, revealed that she was taking a break from the music Industry to focus on her fashion business in 2013 had launched her clothes line known as “Eclectic by Sasha”.

Muna:

This is another musician that seems to have gone off the grid. The former beauty queen who it is said had a child for one of the PSquare duo seems to have moved on and possibly found love elsewhere. The songwriter whose involvement in the Pass the Mic incident with Modenine in the Nokia Rap Battle seems to have reclined for a while.

Ego:

If we remember the enigmatic singer whose face we can never decipher; Lagbaja, then we will remember the beautiful voice that sang along with him. Ego was the star of Lagbaja’s finest performances such as Never Far Away, Konko Below and Skentele to mention a few. It came as a surprise when Ego set up her own band after working with Lagbaja for 12 years and since then, not much has been heard about her. Since releasing I Believe in 2011 and First Step in 2014. She has been quiet on the musical scene. Seems our Ego has laid back to focus on her family and also engage in a little stage play production. She was involved in the August Meeting by Kenneth Uphopho.

Kel:

The beautiful singer had a brief but dominant showing. Her time was characterized by electric performances and energetic verses. Her screamy voice will make sure she is remembered very well. Kelechi Ohia has been notably absent and this has given rise to a lot of rumours. Could this be a reason for her absence or is she just bidding her time for a comeback?

Bouqui:

This is another rapper who is sorely missed in the music Industry.  She is the gospel/conscious/pop rap queen of Nigerian hip hop. For a long time, Bouqui held us captive with her sing along hooks and easy-to-follow rap verses. Her songs are sung at churches and family occasions till date. The songster who is now based in the UK and has since retired from active music making and has moved on to other things. Using her talent and helping out people with talent also, she has not really deviated from the path. She is a mentor and developer for young talented acts. She runs the “unstoppable” talent hunt where winning acts get the chance to gain developmental record deals and other prizes.

Mocheddah:

This singer who burst into the music industry at a very young age of 13,and released a single at 15 seems to be taking a step back. Modupe-Oreoluwa Oyeyemi, also known as Mo, burst into the scene with her debut studio album “Franchise Celebrity” released under Knighthouse Entertainment. The album was introduced by the 2009 promotional hit single “If You Want Me”. However, she parted ways with Knighthouse records in February 2012. She went on to establish her own label, Cheddah Music; a label that has since gone defunct. It seems she has stepped back to find herself amidst all the fame which is a good thing, since she will soon enter into the bond of marriage with her long time boyfriend Olateru Olagbeji. Mocheddah who is also a fashion designer has a factory where clothes are designed and supplied. Added to this she runs a girls blog where she has counsellors and gynaecologists advise girls on certain situations. She is indeed doing well for herself. We miss her and hope for her full come back.

Jodie:

We all remember the song” Kuchi Kuchi” as it thrilled our hearts most especially mothers. The beautiful singer made her break in professional singing when she joined the competition in West African Idols in 2000. Though she did not win, this experience motivated her and she started visiting the recording studio. These visits paid off as in 2010, she released a soulful and artsy winner KUCHI number which immediately burned the airwaves.  The success of the song led her to release her debut album: “African Woman”. African Woman never really took off and soon Joy Odiete Eseoghene has been quiet on the scene. It is garnered that she has taken her time to re-evaluate herself. It seems she has taken the time off to focus on her one year old son who is suffering from  cerebral palsy and Lissencephaly. We miss her and pray for her son continually.

Essence

The voice behind the Super Story TV Drama theme song, Uwale Okoro, popularly known as Essence started out as Kenny Saint Brown’s back-up singer in the days of “Heaven came down”. Soon after she sang the super story theme song and gained popularity she proceeded to recording theme songs for other movies and soon released her album “Essential”. The album had a few hit songs such as “Facebook Love” featuring Jaywon. A while after that she released the inspirational single “I will get By”. She soon disappeared and has been away from the music scene for a while now. So many insinuations rife in the air about her which she had debunked in the past. Well the fact is Essence has turned to blogging. She runs her divazonewithessence a blog that gives you latest gist on  fashion, celebrities etc.

Lami Phillips

Lami’s first single You Know which had M.I Abaga and “Intuition” got her recognition in Nigeria. She was soon out of public sight for a while. According to her, she needed to take time out to concentrate. Her other work comprises of   “Titi Lailai” & “Romantic Voice” where she featured K9 and  ‘Pieces of Love’. Latest gist is that she just recently got signed in with Alter Plate records owned by Harrysong. From the looks of it the mother of two is set to compete with the queens in the house. Looking forward to a comeback.
