The State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP David Misal, disclosed this in a statement issued yesterday in Jalingo.

According to the statement, the suspected kidnappers had invaded the house of one Alhaji Yakubu Atiku of Garba Chede town in an attempt to kidnap him when operatives of the command, attached to Bali, acting on a distress call, engaged them.

“The report of the attack on Alhaji Atiku was received with swift action which led to the exchange of fire from both sides, but with the superior gun power from our officers, five of the kidnap gang were shot dead while others escaped with bullets wounds.

“One AK 47 rifle, one English pump action, two single barrel guns, 16 cartridges, three expanded 7.62mm ammunition and assorted charms were recovered from them,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, two women sustained various degrees of injuries when gunmen, said to be Fulani militia, attacked Ayu in Donga local government area of the state on Friday night.

This is even as the chairman of Takum Local Government, Hon Shiban Tikari, said armed Fulani men, terrorising Takum and its environs on Friday, attacked and injured one person at Fawe village in Takum LGA.

An eyewitness, Mr Henry Ianna, told our correspondent on phone that armed Fulani militia, numbering six, attacked Ayu village during a Christian wake, injuring two women.

According to him, the attackers emerged from the bush while the service of songs was ongoing and started killing. “Some of the people ran into the bush, but the two women were not lucky and were badly caught by bullets. They are currently receiving treatment at the Donga General Hospital,” he said.
