Edo APC Congresses: Stalemate, Parallel Congresses Trails Process In Edo

Crisis yesterday trailed local government Council Congresses of All Progressive Congress, APC in Afuze, headquarters of Owan East local government area as suspected hoodlums lolay to a faction of the party disrupted the planned congress in the local government area.

Leaders and members of the fold in the area were not spared while the commissioner for local government, Hon Jimoh Ijegbai flee the party secretariat venue of the council.

This came even as there was smooth and peaceful congress exercise in Oredo, Egor, Ikpoba Okha, uh Esan North East, Etsako Eest, Etsako East, Ovia North East and Ovia South West.

In Owan West, there was parallel congresses by two factions of the party led one Ojo Asien on one side and another by Professor Julius Ihonvbere.

However, in Owan the hoodlums in their large number had stormed the council secretariat venue of the Congress at about 2:08pm and sacked the party leaders and members with guns, bottles and knives as the people scamper for safety.

Some APC leaders in the area had escaped being lynched to death by the aggrieved youths but the besieged the council guest house for refuge.

Five persons sustained serious injuries while a 75 year old blind man identified as Mr. Osai Isaiah was locked in a room illegally by the irate youths said to be loyal to a faction of the party allegedly led by one Abdul-Ganiyu Lawal a.k.a Abu Millionaire and the council chairman, Mr. Andrew Osigwe.

At the center of the crisis was a sharp disagreement over the position of NEC of the APC on zoning arrangement and harmonization process.

The angered group had quickly mobilized themselves in support of a former youth leader in the council simply identified as Zubairu as their choice elected party chairman for the local government area.

The youths also protested with some council supervisors against the process adopted by the party.

A leader of the APC in the council and Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives representing Owan Federal constituency, Hon. Pally Iriase told newsmen that “the sticking point right now is question of jettisoning the position of NEC or not”.

Hon. Iriase said ” the way forward is to call a meeting of few party leaders to resolve the problem,” adding however that members must abide by the rules and regulations of the party.
In his reaction, the Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Agriculture, Mr. Joe Okogie the people were happy that they participated in peaceful and democratic process.
