1 Dead, 20 Others Hit By Fresh Cholera Outbreak In Nasarawa



One person has been confirmed dead, while over 20 others have been infected by fresh cholera outbreak in Angwan Lambu, in Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

Angwan Lambu is a student settlement close to the Nasarawa State University, Keffi and those affected by the fresh cholera outbreak are mostly students.

Confirming the development to our correspondent yesterday in Keffi, the Mai-Angwa of Angwan Lambu, Mallam Abubakar Mohammed, said he was personally infected by the cholera outbreak two weeks ago.

Mohammed, confirmed the death of one Ramatu Abdullahi, a house wife and mother of eight who died a day after she was taken Keffi General Hospital.

Mohammed, said four of the victims infected by cholera were from staff quarters of the University, eight others in Angwan Lambu, while the other four are students.

He said some of the victims who are mostly students, were hospitalized, while some were taken home by their parents.

“I am the first victim of the cholera outbreak here. On the fourth day of the fasting, I was heading to the farm at the back, suddenly I experienced a turn in my stomach like an iron, I then rushed back home and purged three times”.

“After me, my junior and senior brother’s wives were also infected, but we thank God, they got healed when they were taken to the hospital”.

“Unfortunately, Ramatu, one of my subjects couldn’t make it, she was rushed to the hospital, while vomiting and purging, the following day, she died”.

On his part, the Public Relations Officer (PRO), of Nasarawa State University, Keffi, Mr Abraham Ekpo, confirmed the cholera outbreak to our correspondent on phone, saying some students were hospitalised in the school’s clinic.

“There was an outbreak of cholera, some of our students were reported to have been affected by the outbreak, I don’t have the exact number for now, but no death of any student so far,” he said.
