Over 31 persons were confirmed dead while 48 others sustained various degrees of injuries in Saturday’s Boko Haram twin suicide bomb attacks on a town in Damboa local government area of Borno state.
According to Babakura Kolo,a member of the Civilian Joint Taskforce (CJTF) from Damboa, two blasts ripped through the town of Damboa in Borno state on Saturday evening targeting people returning from Eid-l-Fitr celebration.
“Following the suicide bombings, the terrorists fired rocket-propelled grenades into the crowds that had gathered at the scene of the attacks, driving the number of casualties higher.
“There were two suicide attacks and rocket-propelled grenade explosions in Damboa last night which killed 31 people and left several others injured,” said Kolo.
A local government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the death toll and said : “The latest death toll is now 31 but it may increase because many among the injured may not survive,” said the official.
“Most of the casualties were from the rocket projectiles fired from outside the town minutes after two suicide bombers attacked,” he said.
Meanwhile, Usman Damboa, an indigene of the area confirmed the attack when he posted news of the incident on his facebook page Sunday morning.
He wrote thus, “What happened yesterday night at my hometown Damboa is very disheartening which led to the death of about 31 innocent souls and the number of casualties are yet to be recorded”.
Meanwhile, a police source who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident but however said that 20 persons lost their lives while 48 persons were injured.
“20 people have died in an explosion at Abbatchari Village in Damboa local government Area, Borno State and 48 others were confirmed to have been severely injured in the explosion which occurred at about 8.45pm on Saturday”, said the police source.
