Disturbed by the continued deplorable state of the nations’ security, especially lately, Sokoto State governor, Rt Hon Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has appealed to relevant authorities to call a spade a spade and stop the blame game.
Tambuwal, who is the immediate past Speaker of the 7th National Assembly, affirmed that the time to ensure the establishment of State Police, to help curtail the dreaded insecurity is now.
Speaking at the Sultan Maccido Institute For Quranic and General Studies before flagging off the National Executive Council meeting of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Tambuwal warned that everything is wrong with Nigeria at the moment.
“Nigeria is not secured as expected. Everything is wrong with Nigeria today. Therefore, we must not continue to sit down, fold our hands and presume it will be solved without playing our parts”.
While insisting that the federal government should genuinely wake up from blame game and take responsibility, Tambuwal advised President Muhammadu Buhari to speedily heed the calls of well-meaning Nigerians and rejig his security apparatus without further delay.
“President Muhammadu Buhari should do the needful. We must rejig our security architecture. And with the recent unabated degree of killings across the country, there is therefore the justification for State Police today, as there is no synergy in the nations’ security.
Talking on the roles expected by media practitioners, especially in the face of the current worrisome security situation of the country, Tambuwal advised journalists against allowing their nationalism interest be overtaken by emotions.
“The situation at the moment calls for caution. We should reconsider certain primordial perception that over-cloud our reasons for the greater Nigeria, hence there must be a country first before you can practice”.
On his part, chairman of the occasion and chairman, Northern Senators’ Forum, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, represented by a former commissioner in the state, Alhaji Isah Bajini Galadanchi, admonished journalists to see their profession as a sacred one, hence the need for patriotism in reportage.
Speaking earlier, NUJ National President, Abdullwahab Odesili, reminded President Muhammadu Buhari that the ship of the Nigerian state is actually flaunting.
While advising that there is no room for excuses by the president, National NUJ president admonished PMB to emulate former President Shehu Shagari, who proudly said his greatest achievement was ensuring that, Nigeria remained peaceful and secured.
For media practioners, Andullwahab cautioned against using the media to set the nation on fire.
