Don Seeks Return Of Option A4

A university lecturer and Professor of English Studies at the University of Uyo in Akwa Ibom State, Prof Luke Eyoh, has called for the reintroduction of option A4 to check fraudulence practices of politicians as the 2019 general elections approaches.

Eyoh who made the call yesterday while delivering the 63rd inaugural lecture of the University with theme: “Nigeria Literature and the English Language in the Task of Nation Building”; Revisiting Chinua Achebe’s Vexed Issue of Leadership, said the best solution to free fair and credible elections in the country is when people finish voting, the votes are counted and announced immediately.

He said, “If electorates leave the voting centres, some ugly and funny things may happen. The person in the best position to rig election is the person that moves votes from where it is conducted to another place. But once the votes are counted and announced at the voting centres and results displayed the problem of rigging is half solved. This is why Option A4 is the best among other voting systems in this country.”

Eyoh explained that those who monitored June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, which has officially been adjudged Nigeria’s freest and fairest, agree that the outcome of the poll was made possible by some unique factors like Option A4, the radical voting strategy employed by the then National Electoral Commission of Nigeria and the character of the chief umpire, Prof Humphrey Nwosu.

Eyoh also called for the   adoption of a single term of   7 years for all political office holders instead of the current 4-year tenure in order to solve the problem of marginalisation causing various agitations by different ethnic groups, in the country.

He added, “A constituent assembly should be constituted to agree on a new constitution for a new Nigeria that will adopt true federalism which gives states measure of autonomy.

He said Nigeria is a blessed nation with abundant human and natural resources which under any circumstance should not have found itself in the present political quagmire and called for caution.

In his remark the vice chancellor, University of Uyo, Prof Enefiok Essien, commended the inaugural lecturer Professor Eyoh for the educative lecture.

He assured that University of Uyo would continue to engage the audience and interface regularly on topical issues for the benefit mankind.
