The central working committee (CWC) of the United Labour Congress (ULC) has called for the immediate payment of all arrears of severance packages owed defunct Nigeria Airways workers and staff of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN).
Arising from a meeting in Lagos over the weekend, the CWC of ULC also called for the immediate review of the privatisation of PHCN to save Nigerians the agony of suffering under suffocating darkness which the generating and distributing companies have foisted on the nation.
In a communique signed by the president of ULC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, the union also called on the government to expedite action on the outcome of the national minimum wage negotiating committee as it would submit its report in August.
Also demanded by ULC included the review of the nation’s industrial relations and other labour laws by the national assembly which according to them, seemed to have been consumed by electioneering against the interest of Nigerians.
According to the union, the proposed bill at the national assembly seeking to control free speech couched under the guise of Nigeria Press Council Bill which intention is to protect the ruling elite from being held accountable by the citizenry be stood down.
The union criticised the government on the unveiling of the new national carrier logo and its plan to relaunch the airline describing the project as being polluted ‘Nigerian Air’ hence according to them, $300million for just five per cent stake.
